Learning and the curriculum

Curriculum for Wales, classes, homework and music lessons

✔ Checked: 25.9.2026

Our classes

The school has a Foundation Learning department and a Junior department. Teachers plan together in four groups:

Nursery and Reception

Years 1 and 2

Years 3 and 4

Years 5 and 6

Children learn in their own class for most of the day. From time to time a child or a small group works outside the classroom, for music lessons or extra support.

How we teach

The pupils help shape our themes. Teachers choose exciting topics and fit them to the children in front of them, and use whole-class, group, pair and individual work. Our children grow into independent learners, and Estyn has praised the independence they show.

Curriculum for Wales

We teach the Curriculum for Wales. It aims to help every child become:

Ambitious, capable learners

Enterprising, creative contributors

Ethical, informed citizens

Healthy, confident individuals

Learning sits in six Areas of Learning and Experience: Expressive Arts; Health and Well-being; Humanities; Languages, Literacy and Communication; Mathematics and Numeracy; Science and Technology.

Literacy, numeracy and digital competence run through every area. We follow the children's progress through the year and send you a report on it every year.

Religion, Values and Ethics, and RSE

Religion, Values and Ethics (RVE) and Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) are part of the Curriculum for Wales for every pupil. We use the Jigsaw programme, and we teach it at a level that suits each age. The school has no link to one denomination, and works well with every place of worship in the area.

Our RSE policy is available from the school.

Collective worship

The school day begins with collective worship or a quiet moment of reflection. Parents who want their child excused make a formal request to the headteacher, and the school will make sure the child is excused from morning worship.

Homework

In the infants, homework is mostly reading. In the juniors it grows bit by bit and mixes maths, language, topic work and online tasks.

Music lessons

On top of music in class, the school offers lessons in piano, violin, harp, brass, woodwind and drums.
